Blogging Safety

Heres an article about recent legislation that affects every school that uses federal e-rate funds(and this is almost everybody).
http://people.uis.edu/rschr1/et/2008/10/schools-soon-required-to-teach-web.html
What I would like to know from all of you is:

  1. Do you think teaching internet safety is a good idea, bad idea, or it doesn't really make any difference?
  2. Do you think internet safety is important for elementary students to learn?
  3. What kinds of things do you know about that you would tell a young student to do, to avoid dangerous internet behaviors?
  4. What things do you worry about as far as internet safety?

Here is an article on blogging safety that will help with some of the questions you might have. http://www.blogsafety.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1200000051
Please add your comments. If you cannot yet log in do so in a written word document uploaded to lanschool files on your computer. I would like to hear from all of you by Friday (halloween) boowaahhahahaha!

1. I do think its a good idea because to keep kids away from online predators.
2. Yes to keep all of them safe from harmful sites and predators.
3. If he or she has a myspace account i would tell them to set their profile on private and only to add people they know. Also if they don't then i would show them a few sites about internet saftey.

1.
I think that it is a good idea to teach internet safety, but at the same time most people don't follow internet safety guidlines once they are taught.

2.
Yes, I think that internet safety should be taught at a young age just to show the dangers of being online.

3.
Make sure that they know what sites they are going to and not to create an account for anything that they are unsure about.

4.
Its scary to know that people (creepers) can find out everything about you just by having access to your facebook, myspace, or email account.

k good day.

1. I think it's a good idea to be educated about internet safety. However, I do not think having a class on it will be very beneficial because sometimes you cannot prevent the un-safe things that happen on the internet.
2. I think it's important that they know the basics about it. That way they know what kind of sites that are safe to be on from the ones that could be dangerous.
3. I would tell them to stay away from chat rooms. I would also tell them to stick with reliable sites.
4. I worry about people that I don't know activating my blogs or sites on the internet. I also worry about too much information about a person being posted on the internet.

1.
I think teaching internet safety is a good idea. It never hurts to know the bad things and consequences of the things you're doing online.

2.
Elementary students need to know about some of the things that can happen via Internet if you're not careful. People can get info about you that you really don't want them to have. I think teaching kids about these people and things that can happen will prevent them from every having to deal with it.

3.
I would tell them to never be-friend anyone they don't know well or know for sure it is really that person on the other end of the conversation. I would also tell them to be careful putting a lot of personal information on myspace, facebook, or email accounts.

4.
You always here stories about kids being stalked or harrassed by made-up people online. Stories like the one about Megan Meier really worry me. I think I am a little more careful than, say, my little brother. I worry about him being naive and getting into a bad situation.

:) okay bye

1. I think teaching internet safety is very important and a good idea. Everyone needs to know the danger of what can happen if you are posting unnecessary things or meeting people you don't know online.
2. In today's world, kids are experiences so many things early. Mature language and acts of behavior are introduced to many young kids. Educating these kids on internet safety is, in my opinion, one of the most important steps to protecting kids in this day and age.
3. I would tell younger students to not take part in social networking sites until they are older or with parents permission. The students should not post anything they would not want their parents to see. Kids need to understand that what you post on the internet now, can not be deleted. Those photos or posts will be available for whoever wants them forever. I think parents should also be taught to monitor their kids better on the internet and have access to their passwords and blogs.
4. I worry about younger kids trying to be cool and act like their older peers by creating blogs or being members of social networking sites. Those kids need to be educated on what to do and then monitored after they have access to the internet.

1. I think that it is a good idea to teach it in school.

2. I think you should so that kids know what they are risking when they put private information on the internet.

3. I would tell them to not put private information that they wouldn't want to get out so then their identity wouldn't get stolen.

4. I worry the most about people stealing my identity, because if that happense that is a mess to come back from and it could give you a bad background.

Several important ideas have been raised here!
1. what goes up on the internet is permanent!
2. Your identity and personal information can be stolen
3. People are not who they say they are from 12 year olds saying they are 19 to 40 year olds saying they are 16. Never promise to meet anyone from online!
4. Even if you are taught safe behaviors, people tend to ignore them.
5. Its a good idea to blog with your parents knowledge and permission in case something bad does happen, they can help.
Good ideas all, more later

1.Yes i think teaching internet safety is a good idea because there are a lot of different things kids get involved in that could be dangerous mentaly and physicaly.
2.I think that elementary maybe to young to learn some of the things that they need to go over but it wouldnt hurt to explain it can be dangerous.
3.One thing i would tell them would be not to post anything personal about yourself or your family because its easy to find out more than just what you post if you do that.
4.not much for my own sake because i havent posted anything to personal but as for other people i worry i hope they dont post anything that they might regret doing because it can hurt them in the long run.
